A Vessel of life and play

And if a house is not merely a protected and secure shelter—a “vessel of life,” as Aris Konstantinidis so aptly described—but a space that offers a captivating array of aesthetic stimuli, a place that cultivates the right conditions to awaken sensory appetite, to stir the latent muscle of initiative, and to shape opportunities for participation, play, and self-expression for its young—and not only young—inhabitants, then perhaps we may expand upon that earlier statement and call it a “vessel of life and play.”

Furniture with clear geometric forms and playful alterations of solid and void, like a sorting game. Mirrored surfaces that suddenly “reveal” themselves. Glass panels and blackboards that invite artistic expression. Concealed artificial lighting is activated by automation systems, voice commands, presence or motion sensors. A harmonious interplay of materials with varying textures and glossiness that evoke tactile anticipation. Oversized, shifting shadows cast across space, tracing the daily and seasonal passage of time.

All these elements compose the living environment of a four-member family. Beyond optimally meeting their modern needs, the space is designed to foster and embrace unique experiential moments for its youngest members—affirming John Dewey’s belief that “only what you have received with your soul do you truly learn, and that is what you integrate into your life and character.”
